Money

Read this if you want to know:

Why is there so much in the Bible about money?

How do we receive our money?

What should we do with our money?

The three main dangers with money - and how to avoid them

1. Why is there so much in the Bible about money?

Luke 16:10-13

10He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust (= dishonest) in the least is unjust also in much.

11If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon (= money & possessions), who will commit to your trust the true riches?

12And if ye have not been faithful in that which is another man’s, who shall give you that which is your own?

13No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

--> God watches how we handle our money - it’s a TEST!

--> He then decides WHAT ELSE He can trust us with.

Illustration

It’s like:

So the way we handle our money is hugely important to:

2. How do we receive our money?

2.1 Our money comes from God

Haggai 2:8 ~ The silver is Mine, and the gold is Mine, saith the LORD of hosts.

--> God owns all the money in the world.

--> Therefore He can spend it how He wants.

So the best financial plan is to align:

Our plans ---------- with ---------- God’s plans

 2 Chronicles 26:3-5

3Sixteen years old was Uzziah when he began to reign, and he reigned fifty and two years in Jerusalem.

His mother's name also was Jecoliah of Jerusalem.

4And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his father Amaziah did.

5And he sought God in the days of Zechariah, who had understanding in the visions of God: and

as long as he sought the Lord, God made him to prosper.

2.2 Q - How does God pass His money to us?

A - In two main ways.

#1 - By being paid for the work we do: this is the USUAL route

Proverbs 14:23 ~ In all labour there is profit: but the talk of the lips (= mere / idle talk) tendeth only to penury (= poverty).

#2 - But God sometimes arranges for OTHER PEOPLE to GIVE us money

1 Kings 17:8-9

8And the word of the LORD came unto him (= Elijah), saying,

9Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded  (= directed) a widow woman there to sustain thee.

--> God commanded / directed the woman to meet Elijah’s needs.

Example

We were keen to attend a particular overseas Christian conference, followed by a meeting at a specific church within the same country.

But the trip for our family would cost £1,000 more than we had.

Bookings for the conference closed on a Wednesday.

On the Tuesday, my manager unexpectedly called me into his office and said they’d found an extra £1,000 in the salary budget - and the company were giving it to me!

God arranged for my manager - an unbeliever - to give us the money we needed, at exactly the right time.

2.3 So we should trust God to give us everything that we need

Matthew 6:25-33

25Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought (= Don't be anxious) for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on.

Is not the life more than meat (= food), and the body than raiment (= clothes)?

26Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better (= much more valuable) than they?

27Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?

28And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:

29And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed (= dressed) like one of these.

30Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is cast into the oven, shall He not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?

31Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?

32(For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.

33But seek ye first the Kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

--> If we put God FIRST - He PROMISES to meet all of our needs.

--> That’s a law, just like the law of gravity: it always works that way.

God wants us to TRUST HIM - and NOT BE ANXIOUS about our supply:

Notice also that if we ARE anxious - we’re disobeying one of Jesus’ commands.  (verses 25 & 31)

Illustration

We fed our dog at 6 pm:

Sometimes we can act like a dog - anxious in case God ‘forgets to feed us’.

But God will NEVER forget - He’s just waiting for the right time.

Romans 8:32 ~ He that spared not His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?

--> So if we trust God for the BIG things - our salvation - we can also trust Him for the SMALLER things which we need.

DAVID knew this

Psalm 23:1 ~ The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want (= I shall not lack).

JESUS' DISCIPLES’ disciples experienced this

Luke 22:35 ~ And He said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip (= bag for food), and shoes, lacked ye anything? And they said, Nothing.

I HAD the same experience

On my first mission trip to Africa - the airline lost my bag, and the difficult local conditions meant that I couldn’t buy anything to replace my missing essential kit.

(Clothes, mosquito net, washing gear etc.)

But God provided everything that I needed - in a variety of ways!

He was teaching me to trust Him as my Provider.

2.4 God gives us what we need, when we need it - but not before

Just like He did for my family’s visit to the overseas Christian meetings.

It’s like feeding a dog:

2.5 What if we'll need more money in the future?

We may look ahead and think: ‘How will I afford to pay for ... ?

The answer is - when we need more, God increases the supply.

Isaiah 45:3 ~ And I will give thee (= King Cyrus) the treasures of darkness, and hidden riches of secret places,

that thou mayest know that I, the LORD, which call thee by thy name, am the God of Israel.

--> We can't see the abundant supply of 'hidden riches' which God can give us - like the dog can't see the big bag of dog-food just behind the cupboard door.

Illustration

If we're driving, but then need to go faster to overtake another vehicle:

It’s the same with God’s supply.

2.6 Recap of what we've learnt so far

We should:

A. Seek first the Kingdom of God.

B. Trust God to supply all our needs.

3. Q - What should we do with the money God gives us?

A - Three things

3.1 Meet our needs & those of our family

We need to pay for: housing, food, heating, clothing, transport etc.

This is obvious, so nothing more to say about it!

3.2 Help poor people

Luke 3:10-11

10And the people asked him (= John the Baptist), saying, What shall we do then?

11He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to (= share with) him that hath none; and he that hath meat (= food), let him do likewise.

Q - Are we doing anything on a regular basis to help poor people?

We can’t help everyone - but we can help someone.

As Mother Theresa said: “If you can’t feed a thousand people - then feed one.”

3.3 If we help poor people - we also help ourselves

1Blessed is he that considereth (= has regard for) the poor: the LORD will deliver him in time of trouble.

2The LORD will preserve him, and keep him alive; and he shall be blessed upon the earth: and Thou wilt not deliver him unto the will of his enemies.

--> Helping poor people is one of the best investments we can make.

--> It’s like a protective shield over us.

3.4 But what happens if we don't help poor people?

Proverbs 21:13 ~ Whoso stoppeth his ears at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry himself, but shall not be heard.

Proverbs 28:27 ~ He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack: but he that hideth his eyes shall have many a curse.

--> That’s pretty clear!

We can also learn from what happened to Sodom.

Ezekiel 16:49-50

49Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters,

neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.

50And they were haughty, and committed abomination before Me: therefore I took them away as I saw good.

--> The people of Sodom had plenty - but they did not help the poor.

3.5 We should also invest in the Kingdom of God

Matthew 6:19-21

19Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:

20But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:

21For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

But it is worth investing in the place where we’ll spend ETERNITY - that has PERMANENT VALUE!

3.6 What happens when we invest in the Kingdom of God?

Proverbs 3:9-10

9Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:

10So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.

--> The more Time / Money / Energy we give to God.

--> The more Time / Money / Energy God gives back to us.

So we should treat our money like a packet of seed:

Verses 16-18

16For even in Thessalonica ye sent once and again unto my necessity.

17Not because I desire a gift: but I desire fruit that may abound to your account.

18But I have all, and abound: I am full, having received of Epaphroditus the things which were sent from you, an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, wellpleasing to God.

Step #1 - The Church at Philippi invested in Paul’s ministry.

Verse 19

19But my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Step #2 - God would meet the needs of the Church at Philippi.

But we should be CAREFUL about WHERE we sow:

3.7 How much should we invest in the Kingdom of God?

2 Corinthians 9:6-7

6But this I say, he which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.

7Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.

If we’re announcing an offering / collection - we should never manipulate people into feeling guilty:

… otherwise we’re trusting in man - not God - to meet the needs of the church / ministry.

3.8 What happens to believers if we don't invest in the Kingdom of God?

Haggai 1:2-11

2Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, This people say, The time is not come, the time that the LORD’S house should be built.

3Then came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet, saying,

4Is it time for you, O ye, to dwell in your cieled (= panelled) houses, and this house (= of the LORD) lie waste?

5Now therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways.

6Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, but there is none warm;

and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes.

7Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways.

8Go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house; and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified, saith the LORD.

9Ye looked for much, and, lo, it came to little; and when ye brought it home, I did blow upon it.

Why? saith the LORD of hosts. Because of Mine house that is waste, and ye run every man unto his own house.

10Therefore the heaven over you is stayed (= withheld) from dew, and the earth is stayed from her fruit.

11And I called for a drought upon the land, and upon the mountains, and upon the corn, and upon the new wine, and upon the oil,

and upon that which the ground bringeth forth, and upon men, and upon cattle, and upon all the labour of the hands.

--> The people invested in their OWN COMFORT - instead of in the Kingdom of God.

--> So God caused things to go BADLY for them:

3.9 Tithing

Leviticus 27

Verse 30

30And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the LORD’s: it is holy unto the LORD.

--> The tithe doesn’t belong to us - it belongs to God.

--> Just like a letter doesn't belong to the postman - he just looks after it for a while, and then delivers it to the right place.

Verse 32

32And concerning the tithe of the herd, or of the flock, even of whatsoever passeth under the rod, the tenth shall be holy (= set apart) unto the LORD.

--> A tithe = 10% of our income, which we then give back to God.

This is what Jacob said to God at Bethel:

Genesis 28:22 ~ … and of all that Thou shalt give me, I will surely give the tenth unto Thee.

3.10 Tithing didn't stop after the Old Testament times - Jesus told us to tithe

Luke 11:42 ~ But woe unto you, Pharisees! For ye tithe mint and rue (a type of herb) and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of God:

these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone (= we should not neglect tithing).

Q - Who wants to disobey Jesus?

Further reading

Matthew 23:23

3.11 If we tithe - will we be financially worse off?

Mathematical logic says: ‘Yes’.

But my experience - and that of many others - is that God makes us BETTER OFF, just as He promised:

Malachi 3:8-11

8Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed Me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed Thee? In tithes and offerings

9Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed Me, even this whole nation.

10Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat (= food) in Mine house, and prove Me now herewith (= test Me in this), saith the LORD of hosts,

if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

11And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground;

neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts.

--> If we TITHE - GOD LOOKS AFTER our finances.

--> If we DON'T tithe - HE DOESN'T look after our finances.

So if a Christian in financial difficulty comes to us for help - we should ask: ‘Do you tithe?

If they don’t tithe - they first need to deal with this root cause of their problem:

3.12 Q - What should our tithe be used for?

A - To help two groups of people

Deuteronomy 14:27-29

27And the Levite that is within thy gates; thou shalt not forsake him; for he hath no part (= no share) nor inheritance with thee.

28At the end of three years thou shalt bring forth all the tithe of thine increase the same year, and shalt lay it up within thy gates:

29And the Levite, (because he hath no part nor inheritance with thee,) and the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, which are within thy gates, shall come, and shall eat and be satisfied;

that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all the work of thine hand which thou doest.

Group #1 - The Levites = Supporting those who serve God, with no other income.

Group #2 - Widows / orphans / strangers = Helping the needy.

Notice also that God will bless us when we help these people. (verse 29)

3.13 Q - What happens if believers don't tithe?

Nehemiah 13

Verses 10-11

10And I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given them: for the Levites and the singers, that did the work, were fled every one to his field.

11Then contended I with the rulers, and said, Why is the house of God forsaken? And I gathered them together, and set them in their place.

A - God’s work doesn’t get done.

Like if we don’t feed a fire with fuel - it goes out.

Verse 12

12Then brought all Judah the tithe of the corn and the new wine and the oil unto the treasuries.

--> Nehemiah made sure the people tithed: so that the ministry in the Temple could restart.

It’s the same with churches & ministries today - they need believers to support them via tithes:

3.14 Q - What if we're working in Christian ministry, but the money believers give us isn't enough to meet our financial needs?

A - We should learn from Paul’s example:

Acts 20:33-34

33I have coveted no man’s silver, or gold, or apparel (= clothes).

34Yea, ye yourselves know, that these hands (= Paul's hands) have ministered unto my necessities, and to them that were with me.

--> Paul worked outside of his ministry - he made tents.  (Acts 18:3)

--> If that was good enough for Paul - it’s good enough for us.

So we shouldn’t allow the lack of financial support from other believers, to stop us from ministering:

3.15 Recap of the three things we should do with our money

4. The three main dangers with money - and how to avoid them

Danger #1: Having enough money --> Thinking that we don't need God

Hosea 13:6 ~ According to their pasture (= when they fed), so were they filled; they were filled, and their heart was exalted; therefore have they forgotten Me (= forgotten God).

--> This abundance is why so many people in the western world ignore God / think that they don't need Him.

As John Wesley wrote in 1760:

As many of them increase in worldly goods, the great danger now is their relapsing into the spirit of the world.”

Q - How can we avoid this danger?

A - Start our prayers by thanking God for what He’s given us: then we won’t forget that we need Him.

Danger #2: Getting into debt

Proverbs 22:7 ~ The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.

If we get into debt:

We can AVOID debt by:

A. Doing without.

B. Saving / investing first - then only buying something when we can afford it.

Because of the compound interest paid on loans, and received on savings / investments - this approach works out much cheaper in the long run.

Instead of asking ourselves: How can I afford to … ?’

It’s better to ask: What can I do - with what I can afford?’

Exception

It’s usually fine to take out a mortgage (= a loan to buy a home), because:

Danger #3: Putting money ahead of eternity

Luke 12:15-21

15And He (= Jesus) said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

16And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:

17And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits (= no place to store my crops)?

18And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.

19And I will say to my soul (= to myself), Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.

20But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul (= your life) shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?

21So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

--> Putting money ahead of eternity is a big danger!

On a mission trip, I exchanged a small amount of western currency for billions of Zimbabwe dollars - the banknotes filled my backpack!

Within a few days: hyper-inflation caused this huge number of Zimbabwe banknotes to be literally worthless - so I had to throw them away.

It’s the same when our bodies die. On our deathbed:

We can avoid this danger by looking again at the words of Jesus

Luke 12:29-31

29And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind (= don’t keep worrying about these things).

30For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things.

31But rather seek ye the Kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you (= given to you as well).

So Jesus:

Amen
